What’s happening at the Kate Mullin Association

KMA to commission literacy research

The Kate Mullin Association is planning to commission research into how digital learning activities (eg blogs, wikis, real-time chat, Skype, etc) can help Indigenous children develop literacy skills. The research project is entitled “Using Digital Learning Activities to Promote Multi-Literacies among Indigenous Students in Remote Regions of Western Australia”. It will be led by Professor Rhonda Oliver of Curtin University and will be conducted mostly in the Kalgoorlie region. The Association of Independent Schools of WA (AISWA) has donated $15,000 towards the research and an application is being made for an ARC Linkage Grant for further funding. The project will start later in 2013.

KMA to sponsor a Teacher Award

The Kate Mullin Association is planning to present an award to the teacher who has done most to progress literacy with Indigenous students in WA. This will be done in conjunction with WATESOL, the professional association for TESOL teachers in WA, and the award will be presented at the WATESOL AGM in October/November 2013. The award and judging criteria will be publicised around week 3 of term 1 through a letter to all relevant schools, with submissions to be in by week 6 of term 3. The winning teacher will receive a monetary prize, as well as membership of both the KMA and WATESOL, and the opportunity to present their work at an appropriate conference with mentoring to help present the work professionally.
