On Country Teacher Training Program
Curtin University run an “On Country” teacher training program, focusing on training teacher assistants in regional and remote WA to become teachers. The program is supported by the Department of Education and is for their Aboriginal & Islander Educational Officers (AIEOs). The course is purpose-built for AIEOs, allowing for their remote locations and limited communication capabilities. In September 2022 The University created a video advertising the program – see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3cAnls53hU. The video features student Leanne Eades and KMA Chairperson, Dr Ken Mullin. Subsequently the lecturer in charge of the program, Associate Professor Graeme Gower, travelled to Vancouver, Canada with 2 of the students to talk at a conference of similar programs world-wide.
